CAREER CHANGE SAFETY NETS

We’ve mentioned the fact that changing jobs/careers or retraining completely is scary. There is no getting around that fact. What you can do is put a few safety nets in place, to give you confidence as you move through the process.

A lack of safety netting is likely to lead to you putting off the idea of making a change. The London School of Business & Finance survey we mentioned earlier also found that people usually wait around 1 to 2 years before making a change, if they actually make it at all.

That is because it is all too easy to put something off, it if presents a potential for failure or fear.

With proper research, realistic decision making, and safety nets in place, there is no reason for failure, and fear should be something you use to drive you forward, rather than push you backwards.

The type of safety net you use depends on the type of change you’re trying to make, but a few potential safety net ideas include:

  • Saving up some money before you make a change, just in case something doesn’t work out, or you have to take a pay cut for a short time

  • Changing your hours to see how you go, and whether that changes how you feel about your role

  • If you’re attempting to move into a freelancing role, perhaps build up your business in your spare time (evenings and weekends) before you make the leap. If you do this, you will need to register as self-employed and pay taxes on your earnings, so make sure you cover this base to avoid trouble with HMRC

  • Taking a career break to think about your options and see things clearly

  • Reducing your hours down to part time or remote working whilst you study for your career change. Remember, you will need suitable office furniture to be able to get your work done, but this is something you can address

  • Studying through Open University in your spare time

At the end of the day, careful planning and decision making is the biggest safety net you can have. Provided you explore your options carefully and you don’t suddenly make an unwise, snap decision, with a “life is too short” mentality and nothing else, you have a good safety net in place already.

It’s also important to remember that you’re sure to have people around you who suggest it may be better to stay where you are.

This is because having a steady job, for some, is considered all that matters. Ultimately, if you’re not happy then you have to make a change, and whilst you should listen to advice from other people, you should listen to your own inner voice above all others. People may mean well, but may unwittingly end up derailing your progress towards a career you will really cherish.
