HAVE YOU EVER PULLED A “SICKIE”?

Have you ever woken up in the morning and really not felt able to head into work? Most of us have at some point, but we drag ourselves out of bed, drink a coffee, and head off to our contemporary office anyway. Some people however decide to call in sick instead - this is universally known as “pulling a sickie”.

Basically, this is when you call in sick, when you’re not at all sick.

Have you done it?

As you can see, a huge 39 million lost working days can be laid at the feet of “sickies”. That’s a lot of lost days! The biggest reason for people calling in sick is stress. Now, if you’re feeling stressed, it’s a far better idea to address the issue than it is to hide from it, which is what you’re essentially doing if you’re calling in sick. If you go to see your doctor about stress and he or she signs you off work sick, that’s an entirely different matter; we’re talking about the odd day when you just can’t face the workload you have at your office desks.

Minimizing genuine sickness within an office environment can be done, but if your office is seeing a rise in “sickies”, perhaps it’s time to ascertain why that is. Is your office morale low? Is there an underlying issue you’re not seeing? If more people decide to call in sick than come to work and sit at their bespoke office desks, you have to ask yourself why.

What is your take on the “sickie” issue?
