Another useful technique is to focus on milestones when you have a large task in front of you.

Think back to the last time you were handed a large project. Whether you understood the project well or not, you would have felt overwhelmed by the amount of work being asked of you. This is a normal reaction. The task would feel like a mountain, and you’re stood at the bottom of it, gazing upwards, wondering how on Earth you’re going to begin.

This is a familiar reaction and one which is easily overcome, simply by using the milestone method.

This method involves taking a large task and breaking it up into smaller milestones, which can be achieved in several steps.

For instance, if you are given the task of organising a large event, you might panic at the sheer amount of work you need to do in a small amount of time. Rather than allowing that anxiety to derail you, instead make a list of all the tasks you need to do and group them together into milestones. You could group together refreshments and catering, venue and decorations, invites and guest list confirmations, etc. By breaking it all down you make the task much more achievable.

With every milestone you complete, give yourself a pat on the back. This will work as motivation to keep you moving on to the next one.

Again, this milestone method is a psychological one, allowing you to see past the sheer size of the project and make progress in a slow and steady way. You may be asked to update your supervisor on how the task is going, around the boardroom furniture, and you can do that by reporting back on each specific grouped milestone. This will make you appear confident and efficient, whilst taking the pressure off.
